We will be gathering at the United Nations in New York from September 20 to 23, 2024, as delegates for the Action Days and the Summit of the Future. Our purpose is ambitious and important: to outline a future for our generation and the generations to come. Alliance for Vietnam’s Democracy was accepted by the United Nations as a Specially Accredited Organization and the only Vietnamese NGO to attend the generational UN Summit. We will also have a conference as a side event on September 21 to discuss ideas, visions, roles, and action plans for the goals of sustainable development.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go together with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.
The primary objectives of this event are to address:
• SDG3 (Good Health and Well Being)
• SDG4 (Quality Education)
• SDG5 (Gender Equality)
• SDG8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth)
• SDG10 (Reduced Inequalities)
• SDG16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions)
The side event will feature discussions, where expert panelists will deliberate on Vietnam’s progress toward accomplishing the six SDGs. Following these discussions, young activists will share their vision of a future Vietnam, in line with the UN’s 2030 Agenda. Democracy is not only critical to the success of the 2030 Agenda, but also to achieving the right to development upon which the economic, social, cultural, and political advancement of all peoples depends.
Sustainable development goals require greater commitment to strengthen democracy and respect the rule of law. The event will reserve its emphasis on this aspect of development, in reaffirming existing commitments to the 2030 Agenda towards a brighter and democratic Vietnam.
In 1989, the Berlin Wall came down, symbolizing humanity’s yearning for freedom, democracy, human rights, and human dignity – principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. However, in recent years and in many parts of the world, democracy has experienced backsliding. Many countries have deteriorated into more authoritarian politics. Meanwhile, Vietnam remains a one-party state, deeply entrenched in a totalitarian ideology.
“Peace without justice is tyranny.” This powerful statement reminds us that true peace cannot exist without justice, and we must strive to ensure both in our efforts. While the path to a truly democratic Vietnam is fraught with challenges, the resilience and determination of our people, combined with international support, offer hope for the future.
The future – this word is not merely a concept. It embodies the dreams, plans, and actions we set today to build a better world for our children. We cannot sit and wait. We must acknowledge the countless sacrifices made for our freedom and democracy and take action in shaping our future.
On this International Democracy Day, let us together build the future we want to see. Let us be true leaders, not just in words but in actions. With determination, we can achieve it! From a challenging present to a bright future, you are the one to make it happen.
